The mission of Communities In Schools is to bring much needed resources into the schools to assist students with learning, staying in school and preparing for life. Communities In Schools connects the community with the school. They are able to accomplish their goal of helping students graduate by forming effective partnerships and creating unique programs with companies, both locally and nationally. Initially, the partnerships begin with the schools and parents. Hence, I will conduct a formative assessment to evaluate the utilization of our youth’s #1 resource – their families. The main question that will guide this assessment is: “how well does CIS of Charlotte High School program facilitate parental involvement?”

I work with 108 juniors and seniors daily at E. E. Waddell High School. I experience first hand the lack of parental involvement. It is a rare case to see parents at the school inquiring about changes in rules or policy. Moreover, it is difficult to get the parents to come up for a parent/teacher conference, whether good or bad. Is this the case across the district or is this specific to Waddell? How important is parental involvement as it relates to these students being successful in their academics? These are just some of the questions that spark my interest. I hope to be able to find some useful information that will assist in the engagement of parents in their child's pursuit of academic success.
